Lymphedema

What is Lymphedema?

How is Lymphedema Treated?

Lymphedema is a chronic condition affecting the arms and legs, leading to disfiguring swelling caused by an abnormal build-up of fluid beneath the skin. It can result from hereditary factors or issues like lymph node damage, limb trauma, infections, or venous insufficiency. Initial symptoms often include noticeable swelling and a sense of heaviness in the affected limbs, which can also trigger psychological effects in patients.

Presently, there is no cure for lymphedema, and management involves multiple approaches like compression, lymphatic drainage, and exercise to aid patients. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the likelihood of developing such conditions. Treatment for lymphedema often includes compression therapy and the use of compression stockings. At Evansville Regional Vein Center, our trained staff assists patients in finding the ideal fit for compression stockings, crucial for effectively managing lymphedema.
